Medical reports – Systemic diseases

To help you understand your medical condition, we provide an explanation of medical terms that often appear in specialist reports for patients who are treated for systemic diseases at MEDICOFIT clinic.

Systemic diseases, also known as systemic disorders, are a group of conditions that affect multiple organ systems or body tissues. These diseases are usually the result of immune system disorders that attack one’s own tissues and organs, causing inflammation, damage, and functional problems.

The immune system usually protects the body from foreign substances, such as viruses and bacteria, but in systemic disease, the immune system attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs, causing various symptoms and complications.

Nerves, muscles, tendons, and joints are often the target of systemic diseases such as arthritis, which is why specialised physiotherapy has proven to be an effective solution for relieving systemic pain.

Specialist reports often contain medical terms that are difficult to understand for the layperson. To make it easier to understand and make the right decision about the appropriate physiotherapy, we have prepared an explanation of technical terms that are often found in reports of patients at MEDICOFIT clinic.

Explanation

  • Algodystrophy

  • Algodystrophy is a complex neurological condition, also known as regional pain syndrome or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The disease affects one or more limbs and is characterised by severe, chronic pain accompanied by autonomic dysfunctions such as changes in skin colour, swelling, and sweating.

Although the exact cause of algodystrophy is not fully understood, it usually occurs after injury or surgery, but it can also develop without an obvious triggering factor.
We successfully treat algodystrophy as part of the MEDICOFIT specialist physiotherapy for pain.

  • Neuropathic pain

  • Neuropathic pain is nerve pain that can happen if your nervous system malfunctions or gets damaged. You can feel pain from any of the various levels of your nervous system, including peripheral nerves, spinal cord, or brain. Peripheral nerves are those that spread throughout the rest of the body – to organs, arms, legs, fingers and toes, and are the most common site of neuropathic pain.

Damaged nerve fibres send the wrong signals to pain centres in the brain, resulting in neuropathic pain. Nerve perception or information transmission may be changed at the site of nerve damage and in areas in the central nervous system (central sensitisation).
